Arsenal forward Theo Walcott says the players and not manager Arsene Wenger are to blame for the Gunners' poor start to the season.

The north London outfit have made their worst start to a campaign in more than 50 years and currently sit just one place above the relegation zone in the Premier League.

Arsenal have also conceded more goals than any other team in the top-flight and, as a result, Wenger has seen his position come under threat, the Frenchman doing himself no favours by ruling out bringing in a defensive coach to plug his leaky defence.

The Gunners have stood by Wenger so far, with chief executive Ivan Gazidis giving him the dreaded vote of confidence.

However, Walcott has come out in support of his manager and says it is the players who are at fault for the club's disastrous beginning to the season.

"The boss is a great man, he can deal with anything thrown at him," he told Absolute Radio's Rock 'n' Roll Football.

"Us players, we need to look at ourselves and start doing it on the pitch, to be honest. A lot of people say about the defensive sort of issue but it's not just the back four, you need to look at defending as a whole team."

The England international went on to say that he felt Arsenal would turn the corner soon and believes the fact they are scoring goals is a cause for optimism.

The Gunners will hope they can begin their turnaround against Bolton on Saturday when the struggling Whites come to the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal are 1.44 to beat Bolton, with a Trotters win 7.50 and the draw 4.33.

The Gunners are 2.75 to finish in the top four in the Premier League.
