Rickie Fowler hopes he can follow in Phil Mickelson's footsteps and win this week's Open Championship after triumphing in the Scottish Open.

Two years ago Mickelson followed up his victory in Scotland by clinching The Open title at Muirfield and, after birdieing the last hole to edge out fellow American Matt Kuchar, Fowler is hoping he can achieve the same feat at the third Major of the year which starts at St Andrews on Thursday.

The world number nine appeared to have blown his chance of winning at Gullane when he bogeyed the 14th hole on Sunday to drop two shots off the lead.

However, Fowler birdied the 15th, 16th and 18th holes to finish on 12-under par and the 26-year-old was thrilled with the way he ended the tournament.

Fowler, who also won the Players Championship at Sawgrass in May, said: "Phil Mickelson mentioned to me that if you win this tournament, there's a good chance you win next week so I had to take care of business.

"I don't know what's so special about links golf but it's my favourite. The golf course can play so different day after day and it presents a new challenge. It was a good test this week at Gullane.

"I will have a bit of time to let it sink in and get right back at it. This is a big win. I had a couple of missed cuts after winning the Players, which was disappointing, so it feels good to get back on form.

"I had to dig deep. I played the last four holes well this week and luckily the 14th hole didn't cost me."
