Former champion Graeme McDowell believes that around level par could be good enough to win the US Open on the tough challenge of Chambers Bay.

The links-style course in Washington State is expected to be tough to master for even the world's top golfers, with McDowell preparing himself for difficult conditions.

He told BBC Sport Northern Ireland: "Literally 10 over par could win this week but (USGA executive director) Mike Davis is very smart when it comes to course set-up and he'll probably keep the winning score in and around level par.

"I certainly don't see anybody going low on this golf course."

McDowell was crowned US Open champion in 2010 at Pebble Beach and finished in a tie for second place two years later, before missing the cut in 2013 and finishing well down in a tie for 28th place last year.

Meanwhile, Masters champion Jordan Spieth is hoping that the influence of caddie Michael Greller, a former employee at Chambers Bay will work in his favour.

He told AFP: "I feel like if there's any advantage, it would be towards us with his knowledge of the place.

"It's going to help driving the ball, sight lines and understanding when things get firm - he's going to know where it would run off to a little better."

Spieth is hoping to become only the sixth man to win the Masters and the US Open in the same year, with only Craig Wood, Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods having previously achieved the feat.
