Wales head coach Warren Gatland has confirmed that Jonathan Davies has ruptured his cruciate ligament and will not play in the World Cup.

The 27-year-old centre suffered the injury during Clermont Auvergne's game against Montpellier on Saturday and will have an operation in the next few days.

Davies has represented his country 48 times but is expected to be sidelined for the rest of 2015.

Gatland said: "It's a disappointment for Jonathan and for us, but the advice is for him to have the surgery straight away.

"Obviously the injury rules him out of the World Cup but our focus is his long-term career and we will be working closely with him during his recovery looking towards the 2016 Six Nations."

Davies has been first choice in Wales' midfield alongside Jamie Roberts recently, but Scarlets back Scott Williams could now come in to replace him.

Gatland is set to name his squad for the World Cup in June.
