Fernando Alonso will return to action at the Malaysian Grand Prix and insists his accident in pre-season testing was due to a steering problem.

Alonso missed the opening race of the year in Australia two weeks ago on medical advice following a concussion, but says McLaren's early reports which suggested that he was blown off course in testing were incorrect.

The Spaniard was examined by doctors at Sepang on Thursday and the FIA said he had "passed all mandatory fitness tests".

Williams driver Valtteri Bottas, who missed the Australian Grand Prix after suffering a back injury in qualifying in Melbourne, has also been passed fit.

Two-time world champion Alonso said: "I remember the accident and I remember everything the following day.

"We had a problem in the middle of turn three, a [steering] lock into the right and I approached the wall, braked at the last moment and downshifted from fifth to third and unfortunately in the data we are still missing some parts.

"I had this concussion, went to the hospital in good condition and everything was normal due to the medication they give you to go into the helicopter and to do tests at the hospital."

Asked about McLaren's initial account that his car was blown off course, Alonso said: "Definitely not."

Alonso also said he was confident McLaren had taken every precaution to ensure the car was safe and was looking forward to returning to action this weekend.

Alonso is 11.00 to be the Driver to Retire First in Sunday's race and is 15.00 to clinch a top-six finish.
