Fabian Delph believes the future is bright for Aston Villa after signing a new four-and-a-half-year deal with the club.

The 25-year-old former Leeds United midfielder would have been out of contract in the summer but has opted to extend his stay at Villa Park until at least 2019.

Injuries have meant Delph has only made 12 Premier League appearances for Villa this season, but he made his England debut five months ago in the 1-0 friendly win against Norway.

Delph, who has made 96 Premier League appearances for Villa following his arrival from Leeds in the summer of 2009, had been linked with transfers to Liverpool, Everton and Tottenham, but said: "I am a loyal person and committing my future will hopefully show everybody what type of guy I am.

"There was no way I was going to bail out. I am here for the long run. The fans have been the same [with me]. I am sure they will stick with us, help us get through this season and then, looking into the future, it looks promising to me."

Meanwhile, Villa will be in Monday evening's FA Cup fifth round draw after beating Bournemouth 2-1 on Sunday. Fine goals by Carles Gil and Andreas Weimann put Villa on track and they held on to win despite a stoppage-time consolation effort by Cherries substitute Callum Wilson.

A relieved Villa manager Paul Lambert said after the match: "We needed to try to get through. All credit to the team. I thought we deserved the win.

"The supporters went through a hard time just like the players. The win today will certainly help us. We took a lot of knocks but all credit to the lads because they never let their heads go down, even in training."
