England captain Eoin Morgan has been picked out as a player to watch at the World Cup after making a superb century in a losing cause against Australia at the SCG.

Morgan made 121 from 136 balls in Sydney to help his side recover from a disastrous start to their tri-series campaign, with both Ian Bell and James Taylor falling in the first over to Mitchell Starc.

Twenty-eight from wicketkeeper Jos Buttler was the next highest contribution as England eventually reached 234 all out in the 48th over, but BBC Test Match Special commentator Geoff Lawson at least saw a crumb of comfort for the tourists.

He told his listeners: "It's a terrific start for the England captain. He will definitely be one of the players to watch in the World Cup.

"It's been an outstanding innings, just what England needed from the captain after the catastrophic start. When you've been given the job, it's nice to do exactly what you'd like to do."

Morgan can now be backed at 11/2 to be top England batsman at the upcoming Wortld Cup, with Moeen Ali 10/3 and Ian Bell 7/2.

Meanwhile, Morgan's efforts at the SCG proved to be in vain, as the Baggy Greens ran out winners by three wickets despite a mini-collapse, winning with just over ten overs to spare and claiming a bonus point in the process.

Opener David Warner led the way with a superb 127 from 115 balls, while Steven Smith chipped in with 37, with Chris Woakes the pick of the England attack with 4-40 from eight overs.

The Warwickshire seamer has now taken 16 wickers in his last six one-day international outings, having been given the responsibility of taking the new ball at the start of the innings.
