Everton's first-choice goalkeeper Tim Howard faces up to six weeks on the sidelines with a calf injury.

The American had to be withdrawn at half-time during Everton's home defeat to Stoke City on Boxing Day and missed the defeat at Newcastle altogether.

Joel Robles has deputised in Howard’s absence and is set to remain in goal until the former Manchester United stopper has recovered.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday morning, boss Roberto Martinez said: "Tim will be out for between five and six weeks.

"It is an injury to his left calf. As a goalkeeper it's really unusual to get an injury be kicking a ball."

It remains to be seen as to whether Howard will recover in time for the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park at the start of February.
