Mesut Ozil has handed a Arsenal a pre-christmas boost by vowing to return to action ahead of schedule following a knee injury.

The Germany international midfielder has been sidelined since 5th October after he suffered a partial rupture of the outer band of the left knee joint against Chelsea.

Ozil was not expected to return to action until well into the New Year, but he has confirmed that his rehabilitaion is going well and he could be back on the training pitch with boss Arsene Wenger's squad in the very near future.

The 26-year-old former Real Madrid star told Arsenel Player: "I am working every day to get myself fit and I am on the right path now. It won't be much too much longer before I am back on the pitch.

"I hope to be back training with the whole team again as soon as possible.

"After a time, you really miss playing football. You miss the ball and just want to play. When you watch the games and think that you could have been playing, and playing well, it makes you miss it, but that's the way things are."

Ozil is unlikely to play over the busy Christmas period in the next fortnight, but his return will be a huge bonus to the north Londoners who have moved to within two points of a top-four spot in the Premier League and have Monaco to face in their two-legged Champions League last-16 tie next year.

On their league target, Ozil added: "We have to get our points by playing the game our way and I am convinced that we will finish the season near the top of the table."
