Wayne Rooney insists Manchester United can overtake Chelsea and claim the Premier League title this season.

United secured a sixth successive league victory on Sunday as they defeated Liverpool 3-0 at Old Trafford, with Rooney grabbing the opener for Louis van Gaal's side before further efforts from Juan Mata and Ronin van Persie.

The result perhaps flattered United as keeper David de Gea made some fantastic saves in the second half, but Rooney doesn't think performances are that important as long as his side take all three points.

Rooney was a member of the United squad when they last claimed the league crown in 2013 when they finished 11 points clear of their nearest rivals despite rarely producing their best performances, and the striker feels there is no reason why that cannot happen again this term.

"I think we have to believe we can win the title," Rooney said.

"We are eight points behind and coming into a busy period.

"If we can win our games and the others have one bad result then there is nothing there.

"We have to keep winning our games and hopefully get back to the top and you never know.

"We won the league two years ago and we weren't great in a lot of those games but we got the results.

"We have shown a great resilience this season. Some of the games haven't gone the way we would like but we are winning them and that is a great quality to have.

"We have been here before but we have a lot of new players and this is where the experience of myself, Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher can rub off on the other players."

United trail current leaders Chelsea by eight points and they are three points behind second placed Manchester City.
