Manuel Pellegrini thinks his Manchester City side should be given more plaudits after they beat Roma 2-0 and qualified for the last-16 of the Champions League.

City appeared to be heading out of the competition at the group stage when they lost 2-1 at home to CSKA Moscow last month, a result that meant they had only taken two points from their first four matches.

But they followed up a 3-2 victory against Bayern Munich by winning 2-0 in the Italian capital to ensure they will be involved in Monday's draw for the first knockout stage.

City's goals came from a a spectacular 60th-minute Samir Nasri strike and Pablo Zabaleta's late goal while Bayern's victory against CSKA confirmed that Pellegrini's side had qualified as group runners-up behind the German giants.

Pellegrini said: "We have a lot of different critics. Last time we qualified with many points but played Barcelona and had a player sent off [in the last 16].

"This year against the Russian team [CSKA Moscow] we drew a game and that was important but we recovered and we are playing the same way in the Premier League and Champions League. This team deserve a little more credit than the press always give us."

City beat Roma despite being without the injured Sergio Aguero, Vincent Kompany, David Silva and Stevan Jovetic, while Yaya Toure was suspended.

Pellegrini will now turn his focus to the Premier League, adding: "My message? We are happy because we achieved a target and now we will try to catch Chelsea.

"It would have been a risk to play Vincent (Kompany). I am hoping he is fit for the weekend."
