Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has confirmed the club have offered long-serving captain Steven Gerrard a new contract.

It comes after the former England skipper denied on social media reports of a rift with the Anfield manager after he was dropped to the bench for the 1-0 win against Stoke City on Saturday on the 16th anniversary of his debut for the club.

The 34-year-old, whose current deal expires at the end of the season, revealed in October he could quit Merseyside if he was not offered a new contract.

Rodgers revealed the club had tabled an offer to the 2005 Champions League winner and the decision whether to stay or leave was now up to the Kop legend.

He said: "Firstly in terms of the club the latest is that Steven Gerrard and his representatives have been offered a contract here and at this moment in time that's where it's at."

Rodgers added: "For Steven, everything he's done in the period of time he's been here, for 16 years, is a man who deserves utmost respect and time to consider that. It's not just a big move in his life in terms of commitment but needs time and respect to look at that.

"It certainly won't be money. I've spoken to him enough times at length and that won't be the case. Between now and the end of the season he deserves the opportunity to think."

When asked about reports of a fall-out with Gerrard, Rodgers told reporters: "No. 150% no.

"If there are two words that describe our relationship it would be honest and respect. He is arguably the best player to ever play in the Premier League.

"It's not so much about the number of games he plays now, it's about the level of the game and that is something we will look at."
