Thomas Vermaelen faces a further five months on the sidelines as his wait for a Barcelona debut continues.

The Belgium international defender joined Barcelona in a £15million deal from Arsenal this summer but he is yet to play for the Spanish giants.

The 29-year-old picked up a thigh injury while playing for his national side against Russia in the World Cup.

Barcelona had hoped Vermaelen would avoid surgery but it has now been confirmed he needs an operation to correct the problem and he faces a further five months on the sidelines.

The defender, who has struggled with injuries in recent years, could be out of action until April as he waits for his debut for the Catalan giants.

Barcelona face a tough trip to Valencia on Sunday and they can be backed at 8/15 to secure all three points at the Mestalla.

The Camp Nou outfit are 15/8 to win the La Liga title and 11/2 to land the Champions League trophy.
