Novak Djokovic has revealed he is desperate to land the French Open title, stating it is one of his "biggest goals".

The world number one had been due to end his 2014 campaign against Roger Federer in the ATP World Tour Finals final on Sunday but the Swiss star had to pull out with a back injury, stating he was "not match-fit".

Djokovic admits that the 33-year-old’s withdrawal brought his season to an "awkward" end, as the Serb instead faced Andy Murray in an exhibition match.

"You cannot blame Roger. I'm sure he would play the World Tour finals if he could," said Djokovic.

"This is probably the first time in history that this happens. It's a very awkward situation to talk about, to be honest.

"You never like to win, especially these big matches against big rivals, with the retirement, but that's the way it is."

Djokovic has won the Australian Open four times, Wimbledon twice and the US Open once but he has never managed to secure the French Open crown.

He has reached the final in Paris twice, in 2012 and this year, but lost on both occasions to nine-times champion Rafael Nadal and the 27-year-old admits a French Open title is his top priority.

"Right now I'm at the pinnacle in my career," he added.

"I physically feel very fit. I'm very motivated to keep on playing at a very high level.

"So as long as it's like that, I'm going to try to use these years in front of me to fight for number one in the world and to fight for the biggest titles in the sport.

"(The French Open) is, was and still will be one of the biggest goals that I have."
