Leighton Baines has said the England players would welcome the Football Association extending coach Roy Hodgson's contract beyond Euro 2016.

The 67-year-old's position came under scrutiny off the back of a dismal World Cup in Brazil this summer in which the Three Lions exited the competition at the group stages.

His current deal will take him to the end of the Euro 2016 tournament in France in two years' time, but, speaking ahead of England's next qualifier against Slovenia on Saturday, Everton full-back Baines said the players are keen for Hodgson to stay in charge.

"The players would all be delighted with that [Hodgson extending his contract]," he said.

"We all enjoy working with him. He's a good guy, a good person to speak to.

"He's got a lot of knowledge about football, has had a lot of different jobs, worked in different countries. Us, as a bunch of players, would be really happy if he extended."

Wayne Rooney will win his 100th cap for England on Saturday and Baines said the Manchester United captain fully deserved the honour. He has scored 43 goals in 99 appearances for his country and Baines said Rooney had the respect of his team-mates.

"Wayne's always been someone that people have focused on and we've asked a lot of him over the years as well and he tended to produce," he added.

"He's now moved onto his role as captain and rightly so, he earned that right to be leading the team now, he's a leader among the squad."
