Andy Murray will face Roger Federer at the ATP World Tour Finals on Thursday knowing a win may not be enough to see him through to the semi-finals of the competition.

Group B at the end-of-season event is still up for grabs, despite Federer having won both of his matches against Kei Nishiokri and Milos Raonic in straight sets so far.

The Swiss superstar needs to take just a set off Murray to secure his place in the last four and will be confident of completing that task having won all three of his previous meetings with the Brit at the Tour Finals.

Meanwhile, Murray faces an anxious wait to discover whether his season will end with Thursday's match against the 17-time Grand Slam champion, with Nishikori able to deny him a place in the semi-finals.

Murray lost his opening match to the Japanese star on Sunday and he could shut the door on the two-time Grand Slam winner with victory over Raonic in the day's early match.

Such are the range of permutations still possible that Murray is eager to just focus on his game with Federer, who is 4/9 to make it three wins out of three in the group stages. Murray is 7/4 to pick up the victory.

Federer has won three of his last four meetings with Murray, who is looking forward to another good tussle with the world No 2.

"It will be obviously a very difficult match," Murray said. "But it will be an exciting match. A good one to be part of.

"We've had some very good matches over the years. I hope on Thursday it will be the same.

"Hopefully I can get through the group and keep going. If not, playing against Roger is a good way for me to finish the year, as well.

"There's a lot of positives for me going into that match. It's nice to go into Thursday with an opportunity to go through.  I'm looking forward to it."
