Brendan Rodgers has suggested Steven Gerrard could be left out of the Liverpool side to face holders Real Madrid in Champions League Group B on Tuesday.

The 34-year-old did train at the Bernabeu on Monday but could be taken out of the firing line against the Spanish capital giants given that the Merseysiders welcome leaders Chelsea to Anfield in the Premier League on Saturday.

The former England captain played the full 90 minutes of the 1-0 defeat against Newcastle United last weekend and Rodgers hinted that getting captain Gerrard ready for the visit of Jose Mourinho's men is his priority.

The Anfield coach, who also revealed striker Daniel Sturridge is highly unlikely to feature against Carlo Ancelotti's La Liga title-chasers, said the clash in the Spain capital might be an opportunity for some of his fringe players to put forward their case for more starts.

He told reporters: "This week and these games against the likes of Real Madrid I see as a great opportunity for the squad - you put them out there and you put your trust in them to perform."

The Northern Irishman added: "In Steven's case, if he is playing on Saturday I have to look at what is the priority for him and us. If he played against Newcastle and didn't play [against Real] you could say that was the priority.

"Him and I have spoken about that. Three big games, Newcastle, Madrid and then Chelsea. I need to look at a number of players to look at the games we want them to play in."
