Alan Pardew thinks Newcastle United can beat Tottenham in the Capital One Cup after they shocked holders Manchester City in the fourth round.

Goals by teenager Rolando Aarons and substitute Moussa Sissoko sealed a famous 2-0 victory for the Magpies as they moved into the quarter-finals at the expense of a strangely subdued City side.

The reward for Newcastle is a last-eight trip to White Hart Lane, but Pardew is optimistic about his revitalised side's chances as they have now won three matches in a row and are showing some new-found belief.

He said: "The last time I was in a quarter-final was against Benfica. We narrowly lost that. We will try to make sure we win this one.

"We just needed belief. The victories have given us that. That is the question we have asked. We believed we could win and it was shown at the finish."

Pardew, with one eye on Saturday lunchtime's Premier League clash against Liverpool, named a young side for the trip to Eastlands, but was full of praise for his players, especially Ryan Taylor, who was making his first appearance for more than two years because of injury.

He added: "Paul Dummett, who we think will end up as a centre-back, was outstanding. Armstrong, Aarons and Abeid were all brilliant. They all worked very, very hard.

"Ryan Taylor is a special player in our group. He was given a special round of applause after the game. He was outstanding. His performance was what it was all about."
