Louis van Gaal hopes his Manchester United side will continue to show the fighting spirit that has characterised their draws against West Brom and Chelsea.

United twice came from behind to draw 2-2 at The Hawthorns one week ago before hitting back thanks to a stoppage-time effort from Robin van Persie to draw 1-1 with Chelsea at Old Trafford on Sunday.

However, Van Gaal thought his side could easily have beaten Premier League leaders Chelsea as he thought they created several gilt-edged chances during the game.

The Dutchman insisted: "We kept together and I think we deserved it. We could have beaten Chelsea, but I'm saying that nearly every game.

"However, this is against Chelsea who are a top team and we were at least equal. I've said to the players we could have won but nevertheless we didn't and that's our fault. When you can do that against the best team in this league at this moment it is a good sign.

"I'm not pleased as I still have the feeling we could have won and that we are not taking our opportunities at the moment. I think the fighting spirit for the second time after the same at West Bromwich Albion was good."

United, now 8/11 to finish in the top four of the Premier League this season, face local rivals Manchester City on Sunday. United are available at 16/1 to edge to a 1-0 win in the derby clash while a 1-1 draw can be backed at 13/2.

Meanwhile, Van Gaal is unsure how long Phil Jones will be sidelined for after the former Blackburn Rovers star suffered another injury setback following his comeback game against the Baggies. The defender is currently struggling to recover from sore shins.
