Webb Simpson is ready to forget his disappointing Ryder Cup experience when he defends his Shriners Hospitals for Children Open title this week.

Simpson failed to win either of his encounters at Gleneagles as the USA suffered another defeat to Europe in Scotland.

Simpson admitted the Ryder Cup had been a big let-down for him, saying: "The golf side was a terrible experience because I only got to play two matches.

"I showed up in Scotland really ready to play and excited to play, and when you sit out three matches in a row, it's tough. So the golf part stunk for me. If I said the golf was great, you could call me a liar."

Simpson won the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open by six shots 12 months ago, eventually equalling the tournament record with a 72-hole total of 24-under.

Billy Horschel, Jimmy Walker, Cameron Tringale, John Senden, Kevin Na, Webb Simpson, Morgan Hoffmann and Hideki Matsuyama are also in this week's field and Simpson accepts it will be difficult for him to retain his title.

The 29-year-old added: "What I needed after the Ryder Cup was to get away from the game. I needed a break. I needed to decompress, and I feel like I always play well after a break. I always seem to be hungrier and prepared when I have some time off."
