Former Open champion Darren Clarke says he would relish the opportunity to be the captain of Europe when they attempt to retain the Ryder Cup at Hazeltine in 2016.

Clarke has emerged as the leading candidate to pick up the baton from Paul McGinley, who skippered Europe to a magnificent 16.5-11.5 victory over the United States at Gleneagles at the weekend.

And Clarke, a five-time Ryder Cup player himself, says he would not be afraid of taking charge, with the US smarting from a sixth defeat in seven matches.

He told The Sun: "I've heard it suggested it may be a bit of a poisoned chalice, because we expect to win now.

"Are you kidding me? If you take the job and your chief emotion is fear of failure you're halfway to losing already. My only thought would be what I could do to help keep this fantastic run going.

"So do I want the captaincy? Hell yes. Who wouldn't?

"Nothing lasts forever and the Americans produce too many great golfers to keep on losing, but against that, just look at the incredibly healthy state of European golf and the wonderful players Paul McGinley's successor will inherit.

"We had four of the top six golfers in the world in our team in Rory McIlroy, Sergio Garcia, Henrik Stenson and Justin Rose."

Meanwhile, Paul Azinger has been linked with a return to the US captaincy, having led his country to their only victory this century, when the hosts won 16.5-11.5 at Valhalla six years ago.
