European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley is confident his decision-making will prove to be correct this weekend.

The Irishman paired rookie Stephen Gallacher with fellow wildcard pick Ian Poulter in the Friday morning fourballs with many people suggesting it was something of a gamble.

McGinley accepts that he will make mistakes during the three-day competition but hopes the final result will be in Europe's favour.

"Of course I always worry about everything but, like the players, I go out with no fear," he said. "I know I'm going to get things wrong. It's not a perfect science. People make mistakes and we'll have to see but I'm confident.

"I'm confident I'll be making more right decisions than worse ones. That's what you do as captain."

United States captain Tom Watson paired Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed against Gallacher and Poulter in the fourballs and left two of his three highest-ranked players - Jim Furyk and Matt Kuchar - out of the opening games.

"It just fitted the formula, it's my own personal formula, the way we took all the parameters, put them together," he said. "You can bet that Kuchar and Furyk, and Zach Johnson and Hunter Mahan, will be playing in the afternoon."

Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson are playing against Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson, while Denmark's Thomas Bjorn and Martin Kaymer are facing Rickie Fowler and Jimmy Walker.

Rory McIlroy and Sergio Garcia are the last European pairing and they are playing Phil Mickelson and Keegan Bradley.

Europe are 7/2 to win Friday's foursomes 2.5-1.5 while a 3-1 victory for the USA is available at 13/2.
