Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed Mathieu Debuchy will be out for six weeks and may need surgery but Jack Wilshere's ankle knock is not serious.

England midfielder Wilshere has returned to training after recovering from an ankle injury picked up during Arsenal's 2-0 defeat by Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on Tuesday.

France defender and summer signing Debuchy was carried off against Manchester City on a stretcher and could be missing for three months if surgery is required.

The full extent of the 28-year-old full-back's ligament injury was set to be assessed by Emirates Stadium officials on Friday.

"He has an exploration of his ankle on Friday night and they go in and look how the ligament is damaged, and after that we know if he does need surgery," said Wenger.

"If he doesn't, it'll be six weeks, if he does need surgery it'll be three months. At the moment we don't know."

The Gunners make the trip to Aston Villa on Saturday determined to end a run of three straight draws in the Premier League and put in a performance off the back of the Champions League setback in Germany.

The Frenchman added: "It's a significant weekend. Not decisive but an important one. We want to respond after a disappointing performance [losing 2-0 in Dortmund].

"We failed in some big games and conceded too many goals but we have to find the balance in the team."
