Roy Hodgson faces an anxious wait to see whether Jordan Henderson will be able to play in Monday's Euro 2016 qualifier between England and Switzerland.

The Liverpool midfielder, who it had been hoped would strike up a good central midfielder understanding with Jack Wilshere following the recent retirements of Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard from international football, injured an ankle during training on Sunday at St Jakob-Park in Basel.

If Henderson fails to recover in time, then either James Milner or Fabian Delph are expected to come in to replace him.

Hodgson is already without striker Daniel Sturridge, who has a thigh problem, while goalkeeper Ben Foster and Newcastle United's Jack Colback withdrew from the squad last week because of injuries.

Meanwhile, captain Wayne Rooney is determined to get the Euro 2016 qualifying campaign off to a winning start against Switzerland in what is likely to be England's toughest group encounter.

The Swiss reached the last-16 at the recent World Cup before being edged out 1-0 by beaten finalists Argentina, while the rest of a relatively easy Euro 2016 qualifying group comprises Slovenia, Estonia, Lithuania and San Marino.

"It is important to try to win," said Rooney. "But I think not to get beat and give Switzerland the upper hand from the first game is vital. We all understand there are big expectations playing for England. That starts on Monday.

"I think it's a nice game to play in. On paper it's the most difficult one of the group, and we want to do well and come out with a good result. I feel we're prepared, we're ready for the game, excited and looking forward to it. It's going to be a big test but we've got the quality to do well."
