New signing Daley Blind has said he is "enormously proud" to be joining Manchester United from Eredivisie champions Ajax in a £13.8million move.

The Netherlands international confirmed the two clubs agreed a deal on Friday and he was on Monday expected to complete his switch from his homeland to Old Trafford.

The move will see the Amsterdam-born 24-year-old reunited with former national team coach Louis van Gaal and Blind said he was looking forward to the next step in his career.

Blind is quoted by The Telegraph as saying: "I got a call on Friday night [telling me] that the clubs had agreed a deal.

"I was with my girlfriend and we went to my parents to drink a glass of wine."

He said: "I am enormously proud to be at one of the biggest clubs in the world. Everything has happened so suddenly.

"What exactly has gone off in the background, only my agent and my dad know, but it was a very exciting and tense time."

Blind was left out of the Ajax team for Sunday's shock 2-0 defeat by Groningen in the Eredivisie and will become the latest new arrival at Old Trafford. He will join fellow new signings Ander Herrera, Luke Shaw, Andreas Pereira, Marcos Rojo and Angel di Maria as part of van Gaal's efforts to transform the club.

Blind added: "Did I speak with Louis van Gaal in the last few days about the role I am going to play at United? We did have some informal contact, but the conversations which took place stay between him and me.

"I just want to be part of the team, in whatever role that is going to be, in defence or in midfield."
