Andy Murray is seeking answers to his problems with cramp after edging through to the second round of the US Open at the expense of Dutchman Robin Haase.

Murray, the 2012 champion at Flushing Meadows took the first two sets against Haase 6-3 7-6, but was then taken apart as he started to struggle in set three, losing it 1-6.

The eighth seed also appeared to be under the weather in the fourth set, before recovering from 5-3 down to book his place in round two, with Haase also seeming to struggle in the hot conditions in New York.

And afterwards Murray was adamant that he needed to find answers for his problems, telling reporters: "I started cramping at the beginning of the third set, at the front of my quad and then in my forearm.

"It was not particularly comfortable. I just tried to hang around as long as possible and managed to get through.

"I need to work out why that happened because it shouldn't happen after an hour and 45 minutes, even though it was hot.

"I was in a good position at 2-0 up (in sets), but I didn't know whether to go for it at the beginning of the third set or conserve energy and go for it in the fourth."

Next up for Murray is a clash with German qualifier Matthias Bachinger, who enjoyed a superb 6-3 6-2 6-2 upset win over Radek Stepanek.
