Tiger Woods has revealed that he has called USA captain Tom Watson to say he will not be able to take part in next month's Ryder Cup at Gleneagles because of injury.

Woods' doctors have advised him not to play or practice so that he can concentrate on recovering from the back injury that has plagued him for most of this year.

"I have already spoken to Tom about the Ryder Cup and, while I greatly appreciate his thinking about me for a possible captain's pick, I took myself out of consideration," Woods said in a statement on his website. "The US team and the Ryder Cup mean too much to me not to be able to give it my best."

Woods had back surgery at the end of March which forced him to miss the US Masters and US Open and kept him sidleined for three months.

He has played in four tournaments since returning from the injury but missed the cut in two of them, withdrew during the final round at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and finished 69th at The Open Championship.

Woods, who missed the cut by five shots at last week's US PGA Championship in Valhalla, has hinted that he will not play again until the World Challenge in Orlando in early December.

"My primary wish is for Tiger to be healthy and competitive, and I hope that he'll return to the game very soon," said Watson.

Watson is already without Dustin Johnson, who has taken "involuntary leave" to face "personal challenges" and Jason Dufner, who is currently sidelined with a neck injury.
