Rory McIlroy felt he "gutted it out" after securing victory in the US PGA and hailed his capture of the title as "incredible".

The Northern Irishman, who won the Open Championship earlier this summer, hit three-under 68 on the final day to finish on 16-under-par, one shot ahead of Phil Mickelson, while Rickie Fowler and Henrik Stenson were a shot further adrift.

McIlroy held the lead at the halfway point but the 25-year-old fell three shots behind the leaders at one stage as four players shared the lead at some stage over the back nine.

One of the key turning points was McIlory's eagle on the 10th, which moved him to a shot behind Fowler, while another birdie on the 13th saw him share the lead and a bogey from Mickelson on the 16th allowed him to take the lead outright.

The victory at the US PGA sees McIlroy become the first UK player to win back-to-back majors and sees him become the third youngest player of the modern era to win four majors, behind Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus.

The world number one, who won the US Open in 2011 and the US PGA in 2012, welcomed his victory and was delighted to back up his Open Championship win by landing the next available major.

He said: "I gutted it out. It was a different to my previous major wins.

"To win my second major this year and fourth by 25, it's just incredible.

"Winning the Open was huge for me and I said I wanted to back it up.

"I didn't think in my wildest dreams I would have a summer like this. I just played the best golf in my life."
