Rafael Nadal's hopes of a third US Open title have been hit by the news that he will be out for up to three weeks after suffering a wrist injury during training earlier this week.

Nadal, the Flushing Meadows champion in both 2010 and 2013, confirmed that bad news late on Wednesday evening, with the problem in his right wrist meaning that he will be forced to sit out both the Rogers Cup in Toronto and the Cincinnati Masters.

Spaniard Nadal won the Rogers Cup in Montreal 12 months ago by defeating home hope Milos Raonic in the final, before seeing off John Isner to take the title in Cincinnati.

However, his hopes of a successful defence of both titles are now over, with Nadal confirming: "I'm extremely disappointed that I am unable to defend my titles. Unfortunately, I injured my right wrist on Tuesday during practice.

"After the tests I have undergone in Spain, including an MRI and checking with my doctors, I will have to stay out of competition for at least two to three weeks."

Nadal has not been on court since his shock fourth round Wimbledon loss at the hands of Australian Nick Kyrgios, who won in four sets to reach the quarter-finals, where he lost to Raonic.

And Nadal will now have little or no time to get himself ready for the US Open, the final Grand Slam of the season, which gets underway in New York on 25th August.
