England have continued to dominate on the morning of day two of the third Test against India, despite Gary Ballance eventually falling for a superb 156 just before lunch.

The hosts resumed on 247-2 from day one, with Ballance on 104 not out and Ian Bell unbeaten on 16.

And that pairing batted for almost the whole of the first session on day two to turn the screw on India, who hold a 1-0 lead in the five-match series following their 95-run victory at Lord's.

Ballance weighed in to produce his highest Test score to date, hitting 24 boundaries from 288 balls faced before he was wrongly adjudged to have edged part-time off-spinner Rohit Sharma through to wicketkeeper MS Dhoni.

Bell remained in place at the interval, having moved on to 68 not out, hitting ten fours and a six in the 132 deliveries he had faced.

Ballance and Bell added 142 for the third wicket before the former was unluckily sent on his way, while Joe Root had come in to be two not out at lunch on day two, with England 358-3.

Meanwhile, former England captain Michael Vaughan believes that Alastair Cook's side have done well, but still have a lot of hard work ahead of them.

He told Test Match Special: "England will be delighted. They have got over 100 this morning, they are going at a good clip and they are accelerating.

"This is the kind of pitch where England won't bowl 20 unplayable balls, so they need to create uncertainty with scoreboard pressure and dangle a few carrots at the Indian batsmen."
