Three-time winner Tiger Woods has confirmed that he will miss the upcoming US Open due a back injury, but remains optimistic for his future in the game.

The 14-time Major winner has been sidelined since early March and was forced to undergo surgery in a bid to cure his back problems, which meant that he sat out the Masters at Augusta.

Now Woods, the US Open champion in 2000, 2002 and 2008, has admitted defeat in his bid to be ready to tee off at Pinehurst on Thursday 12th June.

He confirmed on his personal website: "Unfortunately, I won't be there because I'm not yet physically able to play competitive golf.

"The US Open is very important to me and I know it's going to be a great week.

"Despite missing the first two Majors and several other important tournaments, I remain very optimistic about this year and my future."

Woods' triumph in 2008 at Torrey Pines was his last victory in a Major, with the former world number one edging out fellow American Rocco Mediate in a play-off, despite playing with what turned out to be a double leg fracture.

Twelve months ago Justin Rose broke his Major duck by winning the US Open at Merion GC in Pennsylvania and the Englishman can be backed at 23.00 to retain his title at Pinehurst.
