England fly-half Owen Farrell believes that competition for the white shirt is only beneficial for the country despite the pressure that he will come under for the position.

Although George Ford has now been ruled out of the summer tour, Stephen Myler and Danny Cipriani have both had outstanding seasons, while Freddie Burns has also shown his ability on the international stage.

The Saracens stand-off will miss the first Test in New Zealand due to his involvement in the Aviva Premiership final which will allow Burns or Cipriani to stake their claim for the number ten role.

Should one of those two individuals impress, it could see Farrell drop down the pecking order, but the pivot believes that the rivalry is healthy for the team.

He said: "I think the more players that are playing well and are performing week in week out for the team, the better it is for English rugby.

"Obviously, the competition has always been up there in the camp but it's a healthy competition, it's not a rivalry, it's a competition where everyone wants everybody to do well. May the best player show what they can do on the field."

England will continue their build-up to the World Cup with three Tests against New Zealand in June but, despite the daunting games, Farrell is looking forward to the challenges ahead.

"Looking at the fixture list it's massively exciting," he added. "It's what you play the game for but at the moment you've got to focus on what's in front of you and there's a big game coming up for us at the club.

"If you don't focus on what's happening now, you will slip up and you won't end up playing in those England games. It's a lot about what's happening now, but it's also exciting to look through it as well."
