Vice-chairman Ed Woodward has confirmed "deals are being done" to try help deposed Premier League champions Manchester United return to former glories.

Speaking to investors, Woodward announced the club's seventh-place finish - their worst since the 1989-90 season - and a failure to secure European football would cost United £30million.

He insisted, however, Old Trafford officials were working hard to overhaul the squad to ensure United will be competitive again next season.

Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand have already left the club and reports suggest fellow long-serving defender Patrice Evra could also be on his way out.

"We will be active in the transfer market," Woodward said in a conference call.

"The window is upon us and deals are being done but nothing has been announced and no committed funds.

"Everyone at the club is working hard to ensure the team is back challenging for the title and trophies next season."

United are also expected to confirmed the appointment of new permanent manager Louis van Gaal imminently. The veteran Netherlands coach held talks with club favourite Ryan Giggs this week and is expected to agree a three-year deal to replace David Moyes after the Dutch play a friendly against Ecuador in Amsterdam on Saturday.

Woodward added: "We are focused on bringing in a manager. An announcement will be made in due course."
