Adam Scott admits his focus is on winning this week's Players Championship and not moving above Tiger Woods to number one in the world rankings.

The 33-year-old Australian won the tournament a decade ago and is keen to build on some solid recent performances by triumphing at TPC Sawgrass again.

Scott is the youngest winner in the event's history but admits that he took his success in 2004 for granted.

''I probably, interestingly, took the wrong things out of winning the Players at a young age,'' the 2013 Masters winner said. ''When things are going good, and you're 23, it's pretty easy to cruise along and you just expect to keep getting better.

''I don't think I had a very good understanding of exactly what I needed to do, to do that on a consistent basis. I showed up here and played great that week and it held up, but you can pick any other big event for the five years around that time, and I didn't.''

Scott will become the world number one if he can finish in the top 16 at Sawgrass and he is 17.00 to win the tournament outright. Henrik Stenson can be backed at 26.00 to win the Players Championship while Bubba Watson can be backed at 36.00 and Matt Kuchar at 19.00.

Scott insists that the number one ranking is not his main motivation though, adding: ''I'm here to win golf tournaments. That's been the goal, and from that you can get to number one in the world if you win enough, often enough.

''I think the work since the Masters has been good, and hopefully it's going to hold up this week. I would love to win this golf tournament and ascend to No. 1 that way.''
