Lewis Hamilton is expecting Sunday's Chinese Grand Prix to be his toughest race of the year so far even after he set the fastest time in second practice.

The Mercedes driver, who has won the last two races in Malaysia and Bahrain, was 0.141 seconds quicker than Ferrari's Fernando Alonso, who had set the fastest time in first practice.

Rosberg was third fastest, 0.270 seconds slower than Alonso, and only marginally quicker than the Red Bull of Daniel Ricciardo in fourth.

Hamilton said afterwards: "It's a lot harder here than it has been in other places. I missed a bit of practice in FP1 and that put me on the back foot a bit.

"Tonight we have to do a lot of guesswork and analyse the issues you have on track and try and focus on the points of the track where we can really improve the car.

"Tomorrow when it rains we have to deal with what we have and hope for the best. When we get to the race it's going to be tricky to drive because we won't have tested the set-up we have tomorrow in the dry."

Pastor Maldonado ran wide and into a wall on Friday with the damage to the suspension of the Lotus ending his day early while Sebastian Vettel was fifth fastest, 0.2 seconds slower than his Red Bull team-mate Ricciardo.

Williams' Felipe Massa was sixth fastest ahead of the second Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen. Jenson Button in his McLaren, Lotus' Romain Grosjean and Toro Rosso's Daniil Kvyat completed the top ten.

Hamilton, who is 1.53 to win the Drivers' Championship outright this year, can be backed at 1.80 to win the China GP, while Mercedes are 1.071 to win the Constructors' Championship in 2014.
