Wayne Rooney appears to be winning his battle to be fit for Wednesday's Champions League clash with Bayern Munich.

The Manchester United striker picked up a toe injury during last week's first-leg tie against the current holders, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

The Red Devils will fly out to Munich later on Tuesday, and the reports from Carrington are at least encouraging for boss David Moyes.

Rooney, 4.00 to score at any time against Bayern, could even have played through the pain barrier in the weekend victory over Newcastle United, if the game had held any greater significance for his side.

The England forward has been able to train over the last 48 hours, although he may require a pain-killing injection to lead the line.

There are even some suggestions at United HQ that Rooney could catch a later flight, and keep Pep Guardiola and his team guessing as to his true availability.

United, 10.00 to keep a clean a sheet at the Allianz Arena and 23.00 to win the second leg 1-0, are available at 34.00 to win the Champions League outright this season.

United goalkeeping coach, Chris Woods, meanwhile, believes it could be a tale of two keepers in David De Gea and Bayern's German number one, Manuel Neuer.

Woods, a former England goalkeeper, himself, insists: "Now I've seen David's game at close quarters I can fully appreciate how good he is. He's even better than I thought.

"Neuer is also top-class. He has the ability to make world-class saves. Just like David, he will get better and better. They have both had great experiences early on in their career."
