West Brom are waiting to see what happens to Malky Mackay at Cardiff City before making a decision on who their next permanent manager will be.

The 41-year-old is contracted to Cardiff until 2016 but reports suggest club owner Vincent Tan has told the Scot to resign or be sacked.

Mackay is currently 7/4 to be the next permanent West Brom boss, while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer can be backed at 9/4 and Gianfranco Zola at 8/1.

Meanwhile, Keith Downing, who was installed as caretaker boss following Steve Clarke's departure at the weekend, believes the Baggies, 5/1 to be relegated this season, over-achieved last term.

Downing has also said that he has no intention of applying for the managerial post on a permanent basis, and is unsure how long he will be asked to continue in his current role.

He said: "The club is established and has a lot of strengths with a good set of players. We need a bit of realism, no-one has said we will achieve eighth again but the players want to push themselves.

"I think we're aware we're in a relegation fight, no-one has visions of grandeur. The decision's been made and we need to be respectful.

"Last season we got a fantastic eighth position and massively over-achieved. But you need a bit of luck. It's fine lines, that's the enormity of the games.

"This is a big job, it's a Premier League club, I've been support staff and I believe that is my role. We all have ambitions but ultimately here is about supporting it. That's how I see it."
