Matt Prior is refusing to rely on the Manchester weather to help England retain The Ashes with a draw against Australia at Old Trafford in the third Test.

Bad light led to tea being taken early on Sunday before rain ended play ahead of schedule and bad weather is forecast for the Manchester area on Monday.

Australia, leading by 331 after declaring on their overnight total of 172-7, must win the third Test to keep the series alive after England won the first two matches at Trent Bridge and Lord's.

Prior is refusing to take anything for granted though, saying: "Forecasts in England are pretty good at being wrong and it would be very dangerous for us to rely on rain or forecasts."

Of England's ability to save the Test without the aid of the bad weather, the wicketkeeper added: "The one thing about this England team is that we have become tough to beat.

"We've been in this position a few times in the recent past. We'll have a lot of confidence going into Monday that we can save the Test.

"It's a good batting wicket - there is the odd ball that bounces and turns but you'd expect that from a good Test pitch on the fifth day.

"The key will be getting through the new ball. When the ball gets softer it will still spin, but not as quickly, and it becomes harder work for the seamers as well."
