Seven-time major winner John McEnroe believes that Wimbledon champion Andy Murray can come close to equalling his number of Grand Slam victories.

Murray stormed to glory at SW19 on Sunday with a superb straight sets win over Novak Djokovic, with McEnroe expecting the Briton to go on and earn a few more major titles.

"I'd be surprised if he doesn't win at least six majors," McEnroe told BBC Sport. "He's come into his own and there's a lot to look forward to.

"He's got a two, three, four-year period - a couple of years especially - where he's going to be tough to beat, really tough.

"He has a chance to be number one in the world this year if things go well for him. He could win the US Open to have two majors this year - no-one else would have that."

Murray, the reigning US Open champion, is 2.62 to retain his title at Flushing Meadows, with Djokovic 2.62 and Rafael Nadal 6.50.

McEnroe's sentiments were echoed by another former Wimbledon champion, Richard Krajicek, who added: "It's going to be tough for him to come off this high and defend his US Open title.

"But after that I think he will be a true force and he's going to win anything between three and seven more Grand Slam titles.

"He has a great chance to become No.1 in the next six to nine months."
