Tottenham Hotspur hope to have Gareth Bale back in action later this month after he suffered an ankle injury in the Europa League clash with Basel.

Bale was stretchered off in stoppage time of the 2-2 White Hart Lane draw in the first leg of the quarter-final tie against the Swiss champions, with Spurs anxiously awaiting the outcome of scans to be performed on Friday.

However, head coach Andre Villas-Boas is positive that the damage to Bale's right ankle will not prove to be too serious.

The Portuguese, whose side are 2.70 to win the second leg and reach the Europa League semi-finals and 5.00 to win the competition, said: "Gareth has rolled over his ankle.

"It shouldn't be as bad as it looks because Gareth has torn that ligament before and there's nothing to tear now. There is lots of swelling and the pain is obviously very, very big. but we hope to assess him tomorrow (Friday).

"There is a big possibility he is going to be able to make it for the Man City game and he will only miss the next two games.

"We've played without Bale before and we've got the results that we needed, that have put us in the position we are in the league also."

Spurs are currently third in the Premier League table and are 2.00 to secure a top-four finish and qualify for next season's Champions League.
