Ian Poulter admitted he had never seen anything like it after heavy snow caused the first day of the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship to be abandoned.

Less than four hours of play was possible on Wednesday at Dove Mountain in Arizona, with Poulter, 17.00 to win the competition, three up after 12 holes of his match with Stephen Gallacher.

There was nearly two inches of snow on the ground when tournament officials decided to call it a day, leaving Poulter to say: "I don't think I have ever seen anything like this to be honest.

"It's absolutely remarkable to think one minute we're playing golf, albeit it's a little cool, and then within a space of 25 minutes, it turns from playable to cold drizzle to sleet and to snow. And within an hour-and-a-half of all that starting, you've got two inches of snow plus on the ground. It's just bizarre.

"It feels very Christmasy all of a sudden."

Elsewhere, Jason Day, 26.00 to win the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship, is six up on Zach Johnson and playing the 11th hole while reigning US Open champion Webb Simpson and David Lynn had only just hit their first hole tee shots.

Lee Westwood was two up against Rafael Cabrera Bello, but play was suspended before Rory McIlroy, 15.00 to win the competition, could tee off against Shane Lowry.
