Phil Taylor is still on course for a 16th world title in this year's PDC World Darts Championship after beating Robert Thornton 4-0.

He was a difficult third round opponent for the Power, who has been defeated twice by the Thorn this season in major competitions, most notably in the final of the UK Open in Bolton.

Overall, Taylor dropped just three legs, finishing with an average of 97.18, his highest of the tournament so far.

There were also checkouts of 131 and 105 as the 15-time champion sent a message to the rest of the field that he was hungry for more success in this competition. He is now 3.00 to lift the crown once again on 1st January.

Thornton got off to a slow start which allowed the world number one to take the first set 3-1. Things were more comfortable in the second set for Taylor as he was more clinical on his doubles than the Scotsman.

Set three was much tighter and went down to the decisive leg, but once the Premier League winner took it, it was always going to be a mountain for the Thorn to climb.

The Power will now face Andy Hamilton in the quarter-final. These two met in a thriller at the Players Championship Finals in Minehead last month. The Hammer was 9-7 up in a race to 10 but ended up losing to the eventual winner who beat Kim Huybrechts in the final.

Taylor is 1.25 to make it into yet another semi-final, while Hamilton is priced at 4.00 to beat his fellow Stoke opponent for the first time in a major competition on television.
