England secured a draw in the fourth and final Test in India to seal their first series victory in India since the mid 1980s.

India won the first Test in Ahmedabad but the tourists managed to battle back and take a 2-1 lead into the final Test in Nagpur, meaning the draw was enough to seal a first series victory since 1984-85 and inflict a first home series defeat on India since 2004.

The tourists managed a first innings knock of 330, India replied with 326-9 declared but England batsmen Ian Bell and Jonathan Trott hit centuries on the final day to lead Alastair Cook's side to a draw.

Trott scored 143 and Bell 116 not out as the hosts managed to take just one wicket on the final day, with debutant Joe Root adding an unbeaten 20, including a well taken six.

England finished on 352-4, 356 runs ahead, when stumps were drawn.

Captain Cook, who was named man of the series, was delighted with the victory and paid tribute to Trott and Bell for their efforts with the bat on the final day.

"It's a very special day for us, a special tour with great memories but it was a fantastic effort by Trotty and Belly today, how calmly they batted was fantastic," said the England captain.

"We thought the pitch would get worse but it got better. Everyone in the squad can be very proud of what we've achieved after a heavy defeat in Ahmedabad, I couldn't ask for any more effort from the lads."

England will now contest two Twenty20 ties and five ODIs in India, the first Twenty20 takes place in Pune on Thursday.
