James Anderson ripped into India's top order, taking three wickets in Nagpur, as England finished in a commanding position on day two of the final Test.

The Lancashire paceman got reverse swing in the Indian evening and clean-bowled opener Virender Sehwag in the first over as the hosts responded poorly to England's first innings total of 330.

The 30-year-old Burnley Express also had out-of-form Sachin Tendulkar clean bowled and Gautam Gambhir caught behind as India finished on 87-4, still 243 runs shy of England's first innings total of 330.

Tendulkar's career must now surely be on its last legs after yet another poor failure – any talk of the delivery keeping low was merely masking over the already evident cracks in the Little Master's game.

Earlier in the day, debutant Joe Root batted with a maturity that belied his age before a lapse in concentration saw him caught and bowled by Piyush Chawla, India's stand-out bowler, who finished with figures of 4-69.

The 21-year-old said that discipline was the key to his half-century.

"It's not an easy pitch to score on. They set at times defensive fields, so you have to be very patient and be very selective with the areas you're going to score," Root told Sky Sports.

"I just tried to wait and be as patient as possible and be really disciplined and then just grind it out."

Meanwhile, Graeme Swann hit a swashbuckling 56 as England's middle and lower-order made sure their bowlers had something to bowl at.

England are now in a strong position to claim their first victory in India since 1985 with the wicket in Nagpur sure to deteriorate in the last three days.
