Sebastian Vettel was wary of getting too carried away after victory in the Japanese Grand Prix gave his Formula 1 world championship hopes a massive boost.

The Red Bull ace, who is aiming for a third consecutive drivers' title this season, roared to victory from pole position at Suzuka to close to within four points of standings leader Fernando Alonso, whose race ended at the first corner.

Vettel is now 1.61 to be crowned world champion, but the German is not getting ahead of himself with five races of a tense season still to go.

"Still there are many races to go, so I don't want to talk about the championship," Vettel said. "I know that I scored more points than anybody else here, but you don't know what happens next weekend.

"I think we have a very tough remainder of the season with a very new calendar for all of us, with a lot of back-to-back races.

"I think there's still a long way to go and we have to focus on every single race and try to do our best and then we will see whether it's good enough."

Meanwhile, Ferrari ace Alonso, who is 2.50 to be world champion for a third time himself, refused to be too downbeat after a nudge from Kimi Raikkonen cost him dearly at Suzuka.

The Spaniard added: "This result has practically wiped out the advantage I had before.

"But if I'd been told at the start of the season that we would have been in this situation five races from the end, I'd have happily signed for it."
