Justin Rose admitted that it will take some time for Europe's momentous victory to sink in after one of the most dramatic days in Ryder Cup history.

Rose birdied his final two holes to beat Phil Mickelson as he helped Jose Maria Olazabal's team come from 10-6 down to claim a 14½-13½ win.

There looked to be little hope for the Europeans after the first two days at Medinah when they were soundly outplayed by their American rivals.

But Rose and his team-mates dug deep to turn things around and complete the biggest comeback in European Ryder Cup history.

He said afterwards: "We are in shock. We wanted to believe, we really did want to believe, but we had no illusions of how hard that day was going to be; four points against a team that's played so well all week."

Rose was one of Europe's key players, appearing in every round of matches and forming a pivotal partnership with good friend Ian Poulter.

And the Englishman revealed that, even with the visitors trailing by four points going into the final day, there was a real sense of optimism that they could achieve their 'Great Escape'.

Rose, who won three points from a possible five, added: "Ollie said to us at the start of the week, Ryder Cup is what memories and dreams are made of, and he's been awesome.

"And last night in that team room was buzzing. We weren't four down. We were all square. We just knew we had a chance and do you know what? This is history right here. This has been unbelievable.

"I'm going to enjoy it, with the best team I've ever seen, and the best captain I've ever seen, and everyone else, because this right here is special."
