Tottenham will be without Benoit Assou-Ekotto until mid-October as the left-back has a knee injury that forced him to miss the 3-1 win at Reading.

The 28-year-old Cameroon international may need surgery to cure the problem, according to Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas, who was delighted with his side's display at Reading as they secured their first Premier League victory of the campaign.

Spurs can now be backed at 4.00 to finish in the top four of the Premier League this season and at 1.57 to clinch a top-six spot.

"Benoit has a small fragment in his knee that makes it swell a lot," Villas-Boas said. "He has played through pain in the last couple of games. His knee may have to be washed out and if that happens we are looking at a four-week absence."

Kyle Naughton or Jan Vertonghen could feature at left-back on Thursday when Spurs face Lazio in the Europa League. Spurs are 1.83 to win the opening group match while the Serie A side are 12.00 to claim a 1-0 victory at White Hart Lane.

Meanwhile, on his side's victory against the Royals, Villas-Boas added: "It is not about the manager, it is about the players. It is the players that take us to success. Different managers have different leadership styles and the way they go about their business.

"It doesn't matter if a manager is modern, old-fashioned or old school. The most important thing is you have to feel what is right, feel your convictions. Then you can sell your ideas better and take your players to success."
