Andy Murray ended Great Britain's 76-year wait for a men's Grand Slam champion with an epic five-set victory over Novak Djokovic at the US Open.

Murray avoided becoming the first man to lose his first five Grand Slam finals as he edged home in a five-set thriller, eventually winning 7-6 7-5 2-6 3-6 6-2 against the defending champion.

An emotional Murray said after finally ending his Grand Slam hoodoo: "Novak is so strong, he fights until the end of every match and I don't know how I managed to come through in the end.

"When I was sitting in the locker room beforehand, there were still doubts.

"You are still thinking 'if I lose this one, no-one has ever lost their first five finals'. I just didn't really want to be that person."

Murray had previously lost in the 2008 US Open final, as well as two Australian Open finals and the Wimbledon final earlier this year, and was determined to put things right.

He added: "You don't want to step off the court not doing yourself justice. I felt maybe couple years ago in Australia a couple of years ago when I played Novak in the final I didn't necessarily do that and that hurt me a lot.

"If I had lost tonight it would have hurt a lot, but I would have known I would have tried my best and given it 110 per cent."
