Manchester United and England star Wayne Rooney has vowed to keep giving boss Sir Alex Ferguson massive headaches.

The striker is currently on the sidelines after picking up nasty gash to his thigh when playing against Fulham a fortnight ago.

Rooney's Old Trafford future has since been debated at length, with some suggesting Sir Alex is ready to show the player the door in the near future, with Robin van Persie now at the club.

Rooney insists he has welcomed the arrival of the Dutchman but is determined to prove he is still the Red Devils' ultimate top gun.

In a Q & A with Friday's Manchester Evening News, Rooney insists: "It is just unfortunate that I have picked up this injury when I did. Hopefully, I will come back in the team and start scoring again.

"Overall, I think at the most I will miss four games, so I can score that many again. Van Persie has been great for us. It was a great hat-trick he scored at Southampton. We have so many forwards now.

"I think that competition is great for us all. We are all fighting to get into the team and score goals. It is great for the manager and we all have to make sure we give the manager the headache he wants in one way but doesn't in another.

"You can't assume you are going to play. But I have always worked very hard to make the sure the manager has got to play me. I have had this injury setback but I am working very hard in the gym to make sure that when I am told it is okay to return then I will be back in there scoring goals."
