Leeds Rhinos half-back Danny McGuire admits he is desperate to prove his fitness in time for the upcoming Super League play-offs.

McGuire has been sidelined with a knee injury since the beginning of August and missed the Rhinos' Challenge Cup final defeat to Warrington at the end of last month.

But the 29-year-old is now edging towards a return to action and hopes to be in fit in time for the opening match of what he hopes will be a successful title defence in the play-offs.

"The last couple of weeks have been really frustrating. I don't want my season to finish with an injury, so hopefully I can be involved in the play-offs," said McGuire, who is already a five-time Super League champion.

"I got the brace the brace off my knee on Friday, so I'm able to step everything up now and push myself.

"The first diagnosis was six weeks, but if can get back in five that would be the first play-off game, so that's the target. We'll have to see how things go. I've got a lot of hard work in front of me, but I'm looking forward to it."

Meanwhile, McGuire has paid tribute to full-back Brent Webb, who will leave the club at the end of the season to join Catalans Drgaons.

Webb has already played his final game in Leeds colours, having seen his 2012 season ended prematurely by a knee injury.

"Webby has been a great servant for Leeds, so it's disappointing he's going out this way," said McGuire. "Hopefully the team will be able to finish the season off well and give him the send-off he deserves with another Grand Final win."
